Auckland Warriors

How many New Zealand Teams?

I spent a bit of time over the last few months, figuring how many teams New Zealand would/could sustain in the medium term (10-25 years into the future). With the current state of Christchurch, I can’t see an exclusively South Island team getting a run for a while. Nor can I see Wellington being able to provide a substantial supporter base in a small non-RL city. As a result, I decided to combine the two NZ expansion teams I had originally planned into a single side, catering to NZ south of Auckland. The Warriors, having been stretched thin covering an entire nation, would focus on the RL stronghold of Auckland and surrounding areas. Details of the Warriors’ catchment are¬†shown¬†below.

Auckland Warriors

  • Auckland (9 games in Auckland), Waikato (3 games in Hamilton), Northland, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne
  • Catchment of approx 2.4 mil.
  • Auckland (12 games)/Hamilton (12 games)/Whangarei (9 games)/Tauranga (3 games)/Rotorua (3 games) all within 2 hours of a regular season home game.
  • Preseason games in smaller cities within catchment

From my previous Warriors’ post:

The Warriors’ biggest problem lies with their colours. Off the top of my head they’ve had about 6 different colour schemes (Blue/White/Green/Red, Red/White/Blue, Black/White/Red/Blue, Black/Silver, Black/White and now Black/White/Red) many of which appeal to New Zealand but not specifically Auckland. Auckland’s traditional colours are Blue/White, the red and green in the Warriors’ original scheme came from their sponsor at the time “DB Bitter”, I’ve also kept the green to differentiate from the dogs. These colours were also used up until this year by the U20’s Warriors team, although their blue was darker, the colours just look really good together.

Just a few minor changes to what I had done before. From my previous post:

You may remember that I posted a design about 2 1/2 years ago that looks strikingly similar to the Warriors’ current uniforms. I’ve further evolved this design to closer match the original Warriors jersey (white yoke) for the primary. The V-style is unique and has been used in some form by the Warriors for most of their existence.

In addition to the Auckland rep jersey throwback, I included the original Warriors jersey.
