The next expansion team is the South Queensland Jets

Name

The placeholder name of the Western Corriodor bid has thrown up many different names including (but not limited to):

Brisbane

Ipswich

Ipswich-Logan

Ipswich-Logan-Toowoomba (ILT)

Logan

South Brisbane

West Brisbane

South Queensland

South East Queensland

Western Corridor

Jagera

Of that lot, South Queensland provides the best solution to identifying the geographic region the team would cover (West Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan and Toowoomba), tying up the region west and south of Brisbane. The bid is also pushing the Jets moniker (from Ipswich Jets), a strong moniker that has local ties to the area.

Logos

Its difficult to depict a jet top down without looking like the Essendon Bombers logo which is my reason for using green as the body colour. The jet itselt uses a lot of negative space Dark green) to define the wings from the body and silver highlights to give dimension. The wordmark used was chosen so that it wouldn’t distract from the main part of the logo. The sceondary is the jet on its own.

Colours

I had green and silver in mind from the beginning, with both green and silver being underutilised colours in the NRL. The colours are also an evolution of the green and white of the Ipswich Jets. In the end I also used two greens in the logo and uniforms.

Uniforms

The uniforms are simple with the basic design being a body colour with contrasting sleeves and shorts (green body/silver contrast for primary and white body/green contrasts for the secondary). A sublimated chevron design on the front of the jersey adds a bit more detail to something that is otherwise simple and clean. The throwback is an old Ipswich Jets design used in the Allan Langer years.

The Knights have bugged me of late, flaunting uniforms rules by using a pseudo-heritage uniform as their home design. Next year I hope they come to their senses and pick a better regular home jersey.

Uniforms

It would have been easy to use the Barca stripes or the Henny Penny as the primary. Instead I’ve gone with thin red hoops on blue. The secondary is composed of red/blue alternating horizontal pinstripes on white. My favourite part of the primary and secondary uniforms is the striping on the top of the socks, something unique in league. The throwbacks are the inaugural “Henny Penny” jersey and the Barca inspired design that they won their maiden premiership in.

The Storm have pretty unique colours in Australia (outside of WA), plus purple and navy perfectly represent a stormy sky. I switched out the yellow for silver to further add to the gloom.

Uniforms

The primary and secondary are based on their set used from 2003-2009 with more purple. The lightning bolts that have been on their jerseys for over 10 years have been simplified since the logos cover up the centre part of the bolt, making a mess. The throwbacks are based on their inaugural uniforms of 1998.

Name

The Sydney Roosters only represent a small art of what is considered Sydney, they are also traditionally known as “Easts”. I think “Eastern Suburbs” is a bit dated and generic, and lets not even think of “Sydney City” (shudder). A compromise between old and new, being a little more specific than “Sydney” and less bland than “Eastern Suburbs” would then be “East Sydney”.

Logos

The logo is a modified version of their popular logo used in the 1980′s and 1990′s. The rooster is similar to the one used in their 100 seasons logo (which I thoght was a nice clean update) on a wider shield. The Roosters are a well established and unique brand in Australian sport, like Souths and the Dragons, and do not need a wordmark to be recognised. The secondary is the Rooster on its own above the collar.

Uniforms

As a Raiders fan, I’m naturally inclined to dislike the Roosters. However, as a fan of design, the Roosters have just about the perfect uniform set and certainly the best executed uniforms currently in the NRL (Dragons lose points for not having striped socks and the weird shorts) so not much really needs to be changed. The primary is almost identical to what they wear now, with the sleeve stripes moving to the thicker cuffs of the template. The secondary is a traditional blue/white/red “double V” with matching sleeve striping and navy or white shorts and white socks. The first throwback is their traditional heritage jersey and the second throwback is the WWII era sky blue jersey to be used exclusively on ANZAC day (replacing the camouflage mess they adopted last year).

Next up are the Auckland Warriors

Name

Given that there is more than one team in New Zealand (in MY league) I’ve gone back to Auckland, which I like as a name anyway. The “Warriors” moniker also still ties in richly with New Zealand.

Colours

The Warriors’ biggest problem lies with their colours. Off the top of my head they’ve had about 6 different colour schemes (Blue/White/Green/Red, Red/White/Blue, Black/White/Red/Blue, Black/Silver, Black/White and now Black/White/Red) many of which appeal to New Zealand but not specifically Auckland. Auckland’s traditional colours are Blue/White, the red and green in the Warriors’ original scheme came from their sponsor at the time “DB Bitter”, I’ve also kept the green to differentiate from the dogs. These colours were also used up until this year by the U20′s Warriors team, although their blue was darker, the colours just look really good together.

Uniforms

You may remember that I posted a design about 2 1/2 years ago that looks strikingly similar to the Warriors’ current uniforms. I’ve further evolved this design to closer match the original Warriors jersey (white yoke) for the primary. The V-style is unique and has been used in some form by the Warriors for most of their existence. The shorts also use a unique “Koru”-styled striping (fern frond). The secondary uses the Koru striping on the jersey and is more obvious. The throwback is the original Auckland representative jersey.

Logo

Though not a fan of the Cowboys name, the idea of using the horns for the logo is pretty unique. What lets it down is how its slapped on top of that awful, blunt star with the wordmark alternating between navy and red(!?) depending on the application.

What I’ve done is make the star more like a sheriff’s badge while keeping the horns and updating the wordmark. Its a bit busy but it definitely says “Cowboys”. The secondary is the badge on its own.

Colours

I didn’t change the colours, just their prevalence. The gold takes a backseat to the navy and silver in this set and is used sparingly as an accent colour.

Uniforms

The primary and secondary are based on their original design, using “shutterblind” striping on the chest. For contrast, the primary is an all navy uniform while the secondary has more white on the jersey. The first throwback is their original design while the second throwback is the traditional North Queensland playing strip.

Next up is the Penrith Panthers. Not a fan of how the Panthers look at the moment, the jerseys are essentially plain black with a small amount of teal, the away fares better but I still don’t like the teal.

Colours

The Panthers have had an identity crisis over years as to what colours they should use, black is an obvious choice since panthers are, well, black. Outside of that, they used a rainbow of colours over the years. Since Penrith is a working class town, a no frills colour scheme fits them to boot. There’s no need to look any further than their original brown. In the end, like the last time I did the Panthers, black/brown/tan are the colours.

Uniforms

What I do like in the Panthers current set is the use of the licorice allsorts striping, however its way too faint to be noticed. For the primary I went with this striping in brown over the black with tan accents. Its a unique stripe in sport and isn’t too loud with the muted colours.

The secondary is based on their white kits used in the 70′s and 80′s, again no frills.

The first throwback is their licorice allsorts jersey and the second is their original chocolate soldiers look. Sounds sweet.

Next expansion team is the Adelaide Rams.

Name/Logo

One thing Ribot did right was name Adelaide the Rams at the outset of Super League since the other option was “Adelaide Aces”, yuck. Its a strong moniker which is why I’ve decided to use it as well.

The primary logo is a front-on rams head while the secondary is an “A” for Adelaide.

Colours

Newcastle has the monopoly on red and blue so I settled on mainly red with dark purple; red tying in with South Australia.

Uniforms

The primary uniform is all red with a purple/white vee yoke while the secondary is white with a red/purple split V. The throwback is the current(?) South Australia rep uniform.

And now for the 2011 premiers.

Logos

The primary logo is basically the same, replacing the navy with charcoal black, The secondary is the eagle’s head from the primary.

Uniforms

The primary is a twist on a classic, replacing the double stripe with a thicker bar. The secondary retains the double bar with options for maroon and white shorts. The throwbacks are based on their inaugural uniform and the one used during their period of success in the mid to late 1990′s.

A pretty simple solution that the Dragons haven’t got right over the last few years. Both the Dragons and Steelers sides of the merger are well represented.

Logos

The primary logo is based on previous logos but includes St. George’s cross and a cog to represent the Steelers part of the merger. The St. George brand is strong and recognisable enough to not need a wordmark so its been omitted like Souths. The secondary logo is the Steelers cog below the collar.

Uniforms

The red-V remains as the primary though simplified from their current design, hooped socks return. The secondary is a modernised Steelers design with the striping kept to the collar and cuffs. The first throwback is based on the first St. George jersey as a change from the butcher stripes used over the last few years. The secondary throwback is the original Steelers jersey.
